Smokey Old Fashioned

Updated: Jan 21, 2021

The Old Fashioned has made a comeback! You can’t go to any restaurant or bar without seeing someone sipping this majestic beverage…yes, I used the word majestic to describe this cocktail. Seems fitting to me.

We put our spin on this classic cocktail by using our smoked simple syrup. Using smoked simple syrup is an easy way to infuse a little smokey flavoring into your cocktails.

Ingredient List

  • 3 ounces rye bourbon or whiskey

  • 1 ounce smoked simple sugar

  • 3 dashes bitters – traditional recipe call for Angostura bitters. But, this is an easy way to bring your own flavor profile into the cocktail. I prefer a more citrusy bitters so I used a local bitters called Orange Sunshine by AZ Bitters Lab

  • Ice

  • Optional: orange, lemon and Luxardo cherries. These are all garnishes that are commonly used. Again, sticking with my preference of citrus, I used orange and lemon peels to bring in a nice rounded flavor profile. Many people like using Luxardo cherries as garnish but if you do, I’d suggest easing back a little on the simple syrup as your drink may get too sweet.

Instructions

Step 1: In your mixing jar, combine the bourbon, simple syrup, bitters and a few ice cubes. Using your spoon, mix rigorously.

Step 2: Using your strainer, pour the cocktail into the lowball glass. Add ice to preference, I like a large ice cube.

Enjoy! And then, make another!
